Ms. Gast is a lifelong resident of Fort Mill, South Carolina. She graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and completed her Master’s Degree in Forensic Nursing in 2006 from Duquesne University. She practiced as an emergency room nurse and worked as the Forensic Nurse Coordinator for York County. In September of 2006, she had the honor of being appointed as the interim Coroner for York County and was elected to serve as Coroner in 2008. Since her election, Sabrina has worked to increase community awareness by joining committees focused on injury prevention. She has worked with community members to better serve grieving families and established a CARE team within her office. This group of volunteers accompanies Deputy Coroners on death notifications and assists families during the initial phases of grief. She also teaches nurses and other healthcare professionals how to properly care for and interact with victims of violence. She is a certified fellow with the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators, and she serves as a board member. She currently is serving as Past President of the SC Coroner’s Association. She has received many awards including Coroner of the Year, the Palmetto Gold Award, the Boy Scout Distinguished Citizen Award, the Ola Marrett Nursing Excellence Award and the Sue Townsend Award. In 2015, Ms. Gast led the way for the Coroner’s Office to become accredited by the International Coroner’s and Medical Examiners Association, an accomplishment only a few offices have acquired.
